Tesco Clubcard App

The Tesco Clubcard App includes a bar code which you can scan at the check out in place of your clubcard

The Tesco Clubcard App was released in early 2010, so it’s been around for a couple of years now.  This should have Tesco a decent amount of time to fix any bugs and roll out improvements.  But after almost two and a half years, is it any good?

Features

First things first, the features found on the Tesco Clubcard App are somewhat limited.  But in a way I like this.  It’s not cluttered with overzealous marketing messages.  It’s also simple enough for even the most techno-phobic folk to use.

It allows you to check your points balance, which must be the most fundamental function of any loyalty program app, plus there is a bar code which corresponds to your Tesco Clubcard, meaning you can scan the screen of your smartphone at the check out in place of using your Clubcard.  Could this spell the end of the plastic cards?  I doubt it – there is still a huge proportion of people without smartphones – but it’s a nifty feature nonetheless – although it doesn’t always work!  There is also a function to scan a QR codes using your phone, which takes you to the Tesco website where you can purchase the corresponding product online.

Limitations

Other than the features mentioned above there isn’t much else that the Tesco Clubcard App provides.  There are a number of links to the Tesco Mobile site, although how useful these are is questionable.  Having these links may be useful, but they are just links to the Tesco Mobile site, which anyone can access without the need to download an App.  There’s also an option to sign up to the Clubcard newsletter, which I would recommend to anyone looking to boost their stash of points, although this could be seen as the ‘overzealous marketing’ I mentioned earlier by some people.

Opportunities for Improvement

Two functions I would really like to see incorporated into the Tesco Clubcard App are a list of all the latest in-store offers for additional Clubcard points.  I think this could be useful to check when shopping.  I also think there would be a benefit if there was slightly more functionality, such as the facility to check for unclaimed Tesco Clubcard Vouchers via the App.  If I had a third suggestion, it would be that Tesco should offer consumers a few free points for installing the app (like Nectar does with the Nectar Toolbar).  Having said that, this App is completely free so it’s more of a ‘nice to have’ than a functional improvement.

All in all it’s ok but nothing special.  There are a couple of useful features such as the Bar Code and the ability to scan QR Codes, however apart from these there isn’t much else.  It would be nice to see Tesco develop this App further.

Further Notes

This is based on the Tesco Clubcard App v 3.2.  Updates are coming out all the time, keep an eye out for these.  At the time of writing, the Tesco Clubcard App is available on Nokia, Blackberry and iPhone.  You can find more information on the Tesco Website about the Tesco Clubcard App.  There are also a wealth of reviews on the iPhone app store about this app.

Any Chance of a Morrisons Loyalty Card?

I contacted Asda a while back to ask if they had any plans for an Asda loyalty card - it turns out Asda trialled a loyalty card at 19 of their stores but decided not to pursue with it – which got me thinking if Morrisons have ever (or would ever) consider offering a Morrisons loyalty card.

Sadly there are no plans for a Morrisons Loyalty Card at present

As I expected there are no plans for Morrisons to adopt a loyalty card at the moment.  This is a shame – I genuinely believe adopting a loyalty card would open up opportunities for Morrisons to promote their products.  I also believe it could provide benefits to consumers.  I’ll keep an ear to the ground to see if anything changes – and if it does I’ll update this website – but I doubt much will happen any time soon.

Here is the enquiry I sent to Morrisons:

Hi

I just wondered what Morrison’s plans were to introduce a loyalty card? I know Tesco have had huge success with the Clubcard and it encourages repeat custom – does Morrison’s have any plans to introduce something similar in the future? Personally I would really like it if you did.

Thanks

And here is the response I received:

Good afternoon,

Thank you for taking the time to email us.

I have spoken with my colleagues who have advised me that at this stage we have no plans to introduce a Loyalty card however we are always looking to improve the service to our Customers. I have taken the liberty of passing your comments onto my colleagues within the Company who are best placed to benefit from your feedback.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us and if you have any future concerns please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Loyalty Program Tips Appear on Nectar Website

Nectar 300x240 Loyalty Program Tips Appear on Nectar Website

Nectar mentioned Loyalty Program tips on their official Facebook page

Something exciting which happened recently was my article on 15 tips for Nectar appeared on the official Nectar Facebook page (thank you Nectar!).  I tweeted the guys at Nectar the article in the hope that they might tweet me back, but they ended up posting a link to it which caused a sudden jump in the number of visitors to this  site.

This was really cool – the last time anything similar happened was when I wrote an article on What to Do As Airmiles Becomes Avios - I guess these events just illustrate the power of social media nowadays.

If you’re riding the social media bandwagon, remember you can stay updated with Loyalty Program by following me on my Twitter and Facebook (any new likes are greatly appreciated!) along with simply adding me to the favourite links in your web browser and checking back from time to time.

Hmm, let’s see who I can get to mention me next…

Tesco Clubcard Offers

Tesco Direct Tesco Clubcard OffersJust a quick one – there are lots of Tesco offers floating around at the moment including a couple for additional Clubcard  points.  Here is a selection of some of the best in my opinion:

Groceries
50 EXTRA CLUBCARD POINTS When You Buy 2 Potato Products
Valid until 6th May

Tesco Direct
£10 OFF £75 SPEND
Code: TDX-YWXF
Valid until 13th May

£50 OFF £250 ON INDOOR FURNITURE
Code: TD-TKMT
Valid unit 13th May

Tesco Compare
250 POINTS FOR SWITCHING GAS & ELECTRIC

Handy Tip
If you use the self check-out you can say you used your own bags; if you say 3 bags or less nobody checks.

May is normally a good time for Tesco Clubcard offers to start appearing around the place.  The best promotions are when the value of the Clubcard Points outweighs the value of the products you’re buying.  Pay special attention to any offers for 1,000 additional clubcard points – these are scare but when they do come about they are often very good value.

If you come across any bargains please let me know.  As ever you can contact me by email info@loyalty-program.co.uk or Tweet me @LoyaltySchemes.

Loyalty Program Redesigned (Again!)

loyalty program redesigned 300x198 Loyalty Program Redesigned (Again!)

In the end I reverted back to the old design for the site. The morale of the story? If it’s not broke don’t fix it!

First things first – apologies for the lack of new posts over the past couple of months. I’ve been very busy with a few things (having 2 jobs doesn’t help) but I’m back now and I should be able to keep the site up to date more frequently from here on.

The last post I made was about a new design for the Loyalty Program site, which like many things in life was working brilliantly until something went wrong.  An encrypted piece of code in the new design was causing display issues with the pages.  I spent some time trying to get to the bottom of it (I even roped in a couple of more capable webmaster friends who couldn’t find a fix) so in the end I reverted back to the old design for the site.  The morale of the story?  If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

Anyhow, you can expect plenty more updates to follow on the most popular Loyalty Programs including Nectar, Tesco Clubcard and Avois.  There’s a lot of really useful stuff in the pipeline including reviews of the numerous Apps provided by each of the schemes and how these can be best utilised to boost your stash of reward points.  Over the last couple of months I’ve also picked up a few tips and tricks on how to best use WordPress (the software this website is built with) which will make maintaining the site easier than ever for me – hopefully this means no more gaps without any updates.

Thanks for checking back at the site and stay tuned for more news and tips for popular customer loyalty programs!
